I'm mostly an autodidact. I play some  piano, synthesizer, guitar, bouzuouki, bendir, pandeiro, sanza, jaw harp, harmonica, tin whistle, kaval, ney, gamelan. I don't master any of these instruments, I’m rather interested in different ways of "being musical". I sometimes tweak sounds and tunes in a computer to compose tracks for books, films, plays or just for fun.

Live projects

  • In the late 1990s I used to play in an acoustic rock band called Fleurz. We did busking in various places outdoors. A lot of fun (occasionnaly some money too)! No trace of that on the internet.
  • Between 2000 and 2006 I used to accompany story-tellers. We performed in children and adult performances. I worked with Charles Piquion, Julien Tauber and other artists of the collective La Parole.
  • in 2008-9 I did some "world electro" sets with Rafiralfiro and his trio. I recorded on three tracks of their album too.
  • in 2011-2015 I occasionally performed in the Pantcha Indra gamelan ensemble.
  • in 2013 I performed music in the theater play Zobar, directed by Monica Heintz.
  • in 2016-2017 I played balkan music in the trio Gogonele with Estelle Amy de la Bretèque and Ivan Zec.

Music production

  • Some jingles for Radio France Internationale (used in French learning course called Le français, ça vous chante?).
  • Music of the film Beyond the borders directed by Bartolomeo Conti, Richard Prost and Sharon Weill,
  • Since 2010 I record things with my wife in our binomial project called Antiduşmani.

For media related to my writings please see the publications list.

200x115-images-stories-rafiralfiroSince 2008 I occasionally perform with Rafiralfiro and trio. The trio is designed as a blend of "electro-dub-hop" (Raf's main work) with bass guitar (Ertug Tahmaz) and drums (Pierre Ickovic). In this context I play kaval flute, bouzouki, sanza and jew's harp, sometimes with electronic effects added.

In december 2009, the trio recorded its first physical album, named In Limbo. I contributed on two tracks.

Antidushmani em LisboaDuets with Estelle Amy de la Bretèque (my wife). We play these songs primarily for ourselves and for friends. They are in Greek Russian, Romanian and occasionally Turkish. Some have known composers, others don't. The arrangements are usually our own.

These experiences are based on software loopers: either freewheeling, or sooperlooper. They provide ways to

- record sounds, from microphone or midi ;

- instantly play back the samples in loops ;

- mix and tweak the playback if needed.

Freewheeling is best at dealing with many loops. Sooperlooper is best at overdubbing and tweaking on one or two channels. In addition, to the loopers themselves, I use ladspa plugins, piled in jack-rack. To control the software, I use a BCR2000 interface (basically a set of buttons that sends MIDI controls to the computers), and sometimes a BCF-10 pedal rack (to leave the hands free for playing).

At the mike inputs, I play bouzouki, flutes (kaval, ney, tin whistle...), percussions (pandeiro, bendir...), jew's harp and sanza. The other sounds come from a small MIDI keyboard controlling a software synthethizer (fluidsynth).

The overall idea is to improvise, in the spirit of live performance (never go back).

Soundtracks for children books.

A list of the texts I have published. Some items have links to full downloads and/or related audiovisual documents.

My academic talks, forthcoming and past. "Lectures and conferences" are longer, "Papers at scientific meetings" are shorter. If you look for the texts of my classes and their related audio/video docs, those available are listed under "Varia".

These are some lectures I gave while teaching at Université Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense (2006-2008).
